It’s nice to work with products that simply express their quality of build and design without us having to – shall we say, improve it! As with so many of our fashion product commissions, these resulted in a debate within the studio team of which colours they liked, shoulder strap or not that sort of thing! Overall, though they (certain members of the team that is) loved all of them.
The commission, again a sudden request to shoot a wide range of these products by a retailer client how seemed to have simply taken a batch of these products onto stock. We get this a lot from retails who take end of line items or end of season. They call us and want instant images to get the products moving either in a short season push or perhaps and end of line promotion and discounting campaign. On this occasion they had taken the line on a more permanent basis this year, this the first batch and wished to promote the range through extensive email campaigns and press as well as in store promotions. As a product Ness bags are a delight to shoot – yes, no reflections to worry about!

High key images are shot based on the colour of the object – there’s no need to blind with lights.
The way we do high key work is probably all wrong when it comes to photographic technique – it’s because we’re really marketing folk to the core. We shoot the object so it is perfect and ignore how ‘white’ the background is. Then simply cut it out! So we only light the object not the background.
It’s a matter of working out the angles for each product – not just placing it in the light box.
The nice thing about wide ranging product shoots is that no two products are alike – not a string of exactly the same shape boxes. So you have to work out the best angle every time – Some look great face on, others from an angle.

BRINGING THE STUDIO TO CLIENTS – IT DOESN’T COST, SAVES YOU LOADS OF TIME FOR LARGE SHOOTS ONLY.
Yes a bit of a hang up, so we emphasise it all the while! Here begineth the rant… Geography shouldn’t be a matter for the decision making process – the ability of the provider should!
What do we mean? Well on some occasions we hear the excuse of ‘we wanted someone local’. We’d like to say its getting less but in some parts of the UK it’s as stubborn an excuse as ever – they’re still getting antiquated with the horseless carriage we think!
Thankfully most of our clients understand the modern world and ship to us or simply ask us in to them. Unless excessive distance or multi days are involved they know we do not charge mileage. So products can be shipped to us from all over the UK to our two bases – and they are. Also, we can bring our studio to the client – a small space is all that is required and thankfully we do on many occasions. However, we need to keep shouting out – geography isn’t an issue – it’s not too far to ship and we save you costs anyway. It’s not too far to bring the studio to you and then you have absolute control. Simpless.
On this occasion we brought the studio to the retail client – we were shooting a couple hundred other products. (We have also shot these back in the Inverness studio, the products shipped to us). As much of the product presents a flat sheen (tweed wool, lighting can at first thought to be simple. Wrong. The bags are also fitted with nice shinny bits of leather which loose their colour if badly lit. So angles had to be sorted, and scrims and flags used to stop lighting issues.
After this, all that is left to worry about is the different colours and making sure they stand out clearly in the image – like they do in the product’s weave. Clipped and clipped to shadow the shoot was actually conducted onsite.
All that was then left was to consider the clipping – with a floor shadow or simple clip. As is was we did both for the client, the floor shadow version used on the web and the totoal clip as a PNG added to their advertising backgrounds. .
