Spring was in the air… well it was when we were asked in to shoot a new and very wide range of products for Dobbies’ Spring range. And when we say wide we do mean that, from plants and indoor flower arrangements to ceramics like these. We even shot a duck… well photographed a 25mm high easter chick actually!
As usual, we worked within the Dobbies buildings this time Lasswade – we seem to have set the standard now when it comes to doing product photography internally for Dobbies – why ship it when YRSCommercial can work essentially anywhere… We’ve worked in their mock shop, three different warehouses, three types of store room and the boardroom!

It wasn’t just high key images that needed shooting but simple lifestyle too.
The thing is to always let us know what might happen – even the unplanned. When we bring down a studio for high key it doesn’t have lifestyle options there. If we know we bring everything down.
It’s a matter of working out the angles for each product – not just placing it in the light box.
The nice thing about wide ranging product shoots is that no two products are alike – not a string of exactly the same shape boxes. So you have to work out the best angle every time – here the cup’s shape and the flower poesy.. YRSCommercial, Product Photographer Edinburgh.

BRINGING THE STUDIO TO CLIENTS
When we first did this some ten years ago, we were met with a little hostility from the PR and marketing agencies. They liked the trip to the studio (and the coffee), they liked all the process, the excitement of it all. The shipping of 400 or more products to arrive and then be shot, only to sit to the back of the studio after a while as the process can be a bit boring!
The thing is we bring the studio environment now to the client who may be in an office – they may be in a warehouse, it simply doesn’t matter. They can take the time to think through the products. They can have a last minute panic on the shoot day even – before we arrive or during it and no shipping worries. We’ve had clients jump in cars and scream it down motorways because a product was missed – it’s mad, sorry totally mad! So the studio comes to you.
As a client you can still oversea the shoot, but in your own premises. You can even invite the agency, nothing has changed, only the location and as client you in more control. No missing items, no breakages, no ups…
THE ONSITE SHOOT
A bit like the circus arriving, the screens, studio lights, computer systems, backdrops and prop supports all roll into the building from the 4x4s. There’s set-up time and sometimes a reset up time (this happens when sunshine appears…) and then we’re off shooting product.
As we’ve said before and will labour on about… the nice thing for the client is no shipping costs, no accidents in transit that can occur and more importantly for retailers rapid turn over during the product shoot. You see many of the products we shoot for retailers are essentially on loan – proof items sent to the buyers by manufacturers world-wide. So when orders are made, real shipments are sent – but the original pilot goods then have to be returned asap.
Now if your shipping them to a studio somewhere in the UK, well that takes time. This way with us on site, as we shoot it, view it digitally in front of the client, they can the collect the item that very second and if necessary ship it back home to wherever the manufacturer is.
As with all the shoots we do for Dobbies, the range is huge. So there were floor placed items to white backdrops (large planters, rungs that sort of thing) and then table set light boxes and backdrops. Lighting units simply moved around but a real bit of organisation is the hero here. Getting things in a line is one thing when they are to be shot. Grouping them by photography approach – aaahhh that’s another thing. So once set up we go through all your items and re-gig the order to make the portable studio more productive. Then there are the issues of some mirror products needing a tent and others not. Once that’s sorted, its a case of bring items in, shooting them and then relabelling in a real-time fashion the image file name to either a SKU number or ecommerce description label. We can work on between 60 and 80 items an hour if lucky this way.

Once the shoot was complete the images were then poured into the post production system and clipped, colour adjusted and where necessary cleaned up due to packaging damage or perhaps reflections. The images then return in about three days as in this case the shoot was a large range.
