FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY, FOOD STYLING & PROP STYLING.

Do you know how difficult it is to get honey comb in February, November or winter in general?  Or perhaps wild flowers, heather tips and other wild flowers of the summer? We get this a lot, as business or commercial promotional cycles rarely follow the natural seasons and yes, we get asked to produce images that require ingredients well out of season – and not just for food photography, cosmetics products and natural soaps too!

So, its vitally important we have supplier contacts and we owe lots of favours, believe me!  We also have a huge herb garden in the studio, which apart from supporting the studio seems to support the wildlife who munch at it and keep the growth down.  Edible props as we call them, have to be fresh – no point in rushing to Tesco’s, for them to then sit in the hot car for an hour and no matter how much iced water you use they will always look tied.

We literally set the shoot up with the key peice in place then cut the edible props from the garden so they are as fresh as a 100ft walk.

Now back tot he honey. We’re lucky enough to have a friend who keeps bees.  They pot their honey with the comb, so this is the way we got the comb for the shoot – and yes, it tastes fabulous.  The wild flowers, we went dried- no other way as nothing was growing anywhere when we shot the collection.  Luckily we dry many plants ourselves – the poppies from the studio gardens in Cannock, the heather from our studio in Inverness.  So, it was a matter of bringing these all together using a simply raw finished slate background – not dressed – and a little gentle lighting from the side using a yellow bulb continuous light rig to make it feel a little more summery than it actually was.

Now we’re not too fond of the current trend to shoot bottles and long containers flat on their side and then shoot from above – well it never happens in real life does it, not unless you have knocked them over!  But on this occasion, we tried and the jars looked great on their side.  The only thing to watch  for was the bubble created by the runny honey at the top of the jar, which we removed in Photoshop. A little blue tack held the container in place and the set was then built around the jar.  So a simply vertical tether rig was set up for the client, a retailer who has a very artisan premium proposition, and shot a wide rage of jars each with a specific selection of flowers and props reflecting the source of the nectar by the bees.
