An amazingly fresh range of new curry sauces, based on family handed down recipes from the southern India region.  The nice thing about these are that they are so light – not thick and over powering – adding a fragrance and spice that compliments the meat, fish or vegetables they are cooked with.

All natural ingredients, they are setting a new standard in artisan Indian cooking sauces. We were asked in originally to shoot images for the new packaging of the product.  This has led to us shooting images for a much wider range of uses for the Burton on Trent producer,  from the web through to advertising.

The great thing about Asian cooking is all that spice fragrance… fills the studio.

We cook a lot of products for clients in the two studios we have – and it has to be said that Asian cooking always makes you feel hungry in the food shoot. All those spices… eeeemmmmm!.

Getting the texture right is an absolute with ‘stew’ type products and dishes.

This wasn’t the first attempt at this dish – the third I think, as we needed to get the consistency write for the client – not what you get in the restaurant. Our client had a very specific brief to the consistency and amount of sauce as it had to look authentic southern Indian… not authentic Cannock! YRSFood, Food Photographer, Burton on Trent.

This was a great fun shoot, we styled using a new background technique – antique concrete and slate… yes were looking for the distressed mineral look so to speak and not limiting the images to antique timber!

It’s a case of becoming a really good plasterer – or should I say really bad one as you need loads bumps and troughs in epoxy resign fillers. Then it’s creative time with the spray paints!  The result is a antique stone or concrete finish which we can control – less of natures hand!  Then we had to think fabrics – so we went for crushed silks in rich burgundy and gold, plain and no pattern so the dish stayed centre piece.

Lastly were the ingredients, most of which you can find in a good Asian grocers, so we used loads of them in the advertising shots – especially the curry leaves, which the sauces mainly use!  Lastly, we had fun ageing the props and traditional cast iron Indian dishes rather than the more extravagant cooper and stainless steel – we were trying to keep the heritage in the family recipes that way.

THE FOOD PHOTO SHOOT

A word of warning – don’t forget chillies sting you in the eyes – the lips and anywhere else you decide to put your fingers, whilst trying to work the set-piece out! The layout needed was a kitchen table top experience – so a little cluttered, a little messy and a lot of good cooking.. that type of feel to the styling. We had to distress the new bowls – a little brick acid and a lot of rain! So it all looks natural.

Then it was a matter of ‘mechanics’. mechanics? Yes, the size of the packaging totally dictates the size of the image space – a little bleed yes, but not too much. So you end up shooting two ways – first for the packaging images, then for the advertising and web images which have far more space involved. The only thing left was to then change the colour of the images in post production from RGB to CMYK – not so simple as the colours had an orange, yellow tone pallet bias – CMYK can make these colours dirty or dark when simple converting – so, a load of colour references were made, making sure the packaging images looked exactly the same as the web.
