Shooting edible oil is probably one of the nicest types of shoot we do – we know that sounds a little sad!  But it is the way we can play with the light that is of interest to us – the real fun bit – bringing out the colour of the oil or perhaps highlighting the ingredients that a producer may have added to flavour it, such as fire red chillies or perhaps lemon zest and herbs.

Then you have the shape of the bottles, which can refract the light in different ways – even setting some of the colours literally on fire with their glow.  So as you can see its fun.  Most of the time we shoot bottles like this to a PNG file – clipped and the designers take the image and simply place it on top of a range of background images to suit their ideas – so the quality of the image created by us is important as it has to stretch quite a breadth of design ideas: from long stretching landscapes and farm fields to dark and moody kitchen looks.  Occasionally we get the chance to create the whole thing either for an advertising shot or a more creative area of a website with the traditional white background images being used in the ecommerce area.

This shoot was just such the case for a retailer specialising in artisan foods – very fine and expensive foods.  Gusto have their own website and branding – so, he wanted the look to be totally different and reflect the brand promise of his business – the handcrafted feel. So the styling was simple – create an image where the subject is the creation of a bottle of lemon flavoured olive oil.  We took the chance to use dark granite, combine it with a very old timber kitchen top and a few copper kitchen pieces.  The shot was then light from the left rear side of the set using a coloured lamp and snoot, diffused a little through a couple of empty wine bottles and the targeted at the bottle, creating nice shadows else where.  We did this for a wide range of different oils not just Gusto so they had a farmhouse collection so to speak.
