FOOD PHOTOGRAPHER. MEAT & POULTRY. MUNRO RECIPES CASE STUDY.
FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY, RECIPE PREPARATION, FOOD STYLING & PROP STYLING.
We are often asked by clients to ‘do something’ with their products. This is a client base who have what can be crudely called raw material products – meat, fish, vegetables or basic processed products such as dairy. Once the product images whether lifestyle or not are complete, clients quickly realise that they need to explore how to consume the product more – especially if premium value – in short an excise to cook with it more often.
On this occasion for Munro’s we were asked to go a step further though. What to do with left over Turkey or other Christmas joint meats which often cause the usual ‘left over Christmas joke we are all to familiar with. So being marketing consultants by heart we thought we given them a free campaign idea – ‘eat more waste less’. Then we created recipes or re-engineered the recipes for that purpose – using all the left over turkey roast, beef or pork roast and yes the smoked salmon. The eat less tide nicely in the value bundle for the client as the customers could get more from their Christmas table investment as-well-as targeting the food waste issues we have in the UK.
So this born in mind,20 left over recipes were sourced – not just any old receipt we though quick and fast so people a little ‘stodgy’ from the Christmas indulgence could take only a few minutes and make something very light, perhaps a little spicy to clean the pallet and often finger-food so little washing up is needed!
The colour pallets were really set by the ingredients, so a dramatic midnight blue background was created to bring out the colours of the ingredients-promote them more than complement them. The aboard first blacked out was layered with a series of sponge crunches – greys through to Briton Blue until the right pattern was created. The flatware – well, we went for the more exotic after all Christmas is all about Dickens when it comes to styling, so we used Denby as well as Spode and Wedgewood (sometimes being next to Stoke on Trent can really be a fantastic bonus to the studio!). The image collection was set entirely vertically no angle shots and the lighting we kept fair uniform – no dramatic shafts of lighting- so we shot it entirely under continuous lighting not natural lighting in our closed window room.
Each shot was tethered so the plate was built to 80% off set and then finished under the camera. Nice an easy! As we also produce the recipe cards we moved the content and the images to an A5 format card, designed the layout to PDF for the client to print and use in each of its outlets. We also resized the PDF for digital use in emails and of course the recipe website to download.
The client only had to choose the recipes – the whole process was outsourced and 12 cards produced in 7 days from state to PDF publication.
