Food Photographer. Meat & Poultry. John Munro Limited
Food Photographer Inverness
A new push on social media to support a chain of butcher’s retail shops and a business brand renowned in Inverness & the Highlands. A call came into the studio from the owner asking if we could come in and discuss how we could create images of his product for a new social media campaign and a new website that was being created for the retail chain – separating their digital presence from the companies wholesale website.
A simple meeting, with the owner and a newly appointed social media adviser, we explained the approach and the link of creating recipes using their product. To be honest the discussion was more from our past life – yes marketing consultants – as we advised the owner (and the adviser) on an integrated image approach: create the images and use in counter leaflets, recipe cards, posters for promotion and yes, the social media campaign. This resulted in a multi stage shoot of their entire product range and yes, a range of recipe cards.

Using a clients product to create a dish…
We’re lucky that we can create the dishes, as well as shoot them, style them and recommend them.
Creating added value for a food product by its possible use.
Why just shoot the product if it is a raw material. Shoot a dish and show how it’s used. YRSFood, Food Photographer, Inverness.
A food product shoot and food editorial shoot combined.
We had shown the owner of John Munro Limited how not to shoot meat products – they look terrible and cold – shot to white with a little shadow. Sorry, this works for non food products and food packaged products yes, but looks horrible when done for non packaged food products. It just looks like a slab of meat… no finesse.
So we had to think of around 40 different execution of lifestyle images and they had to be done quick as the product would loose its freshness if stored in the studio coolers to long. Creating a lifestyle set can take at least 15 minutes up to 3 hours! So from a product point of view and a commercial one, the style had to be simple and easily created in a product shoot workflow format – fast and furious!
The lighting was created using lamps – can’t guarantee the sunlight in Inverness. The lamps we hand paint to create different colours tones and effects. A consistent lighting format.

THE RECIPE CARDS PHOTO SHOOT & DESIGN.
As we mentioned before, we’re ex marketing consultants – so we occasionally create and design publications for our clients – ebooks, posters and yes, recipe cards. The recipe card process is, however, a bit more than design – it’s an outsourced service really. We source a range of recipes for the client, who then selects the recipes they want creating. We then cook the recipe, style the image, shoot the image and then roll this all back into the recipe card, which we design and publish to PDF. All for one fixed rate price (we do charge for a minimum of 6 cards).

The nice thing about the recipe cards for John Munro is the chance we had to introduce a ’round the world’ theme for the first recipes from Asia, Mexico and yes more traditional cooking approaches from France and Italy.
We also introduced a ‘food waste’ theme which they are still using – on how to be effective for wood left overs – vital after Christmas.
As we create a ‘prop list’ for those used in each of the styled shoots, we have been able to recreate John Munro Limited’s images for new product introductions and changing product specifications. In this image the scales are circa 1950, the forks Victorian. As for edible props, each studio has a huge herb garden, which we literally run out to, so they are at their freshest for the shoot.
