A Christmas is a coming, the goose is getting… no it’s lamb, no it’s turkey or is it beef…
Christmas should be but once a year or so they say. But in a food photography studio we have an alternative universe so to speak. We never play ‘I wish it was Christmas everyday’ – because unlike the song from February through to about November it quite literally is Christmas every day for us here in the studio. Our first Christmas product commissions often start third week in February as the first samples arrive in the UK from the far off manufacturing places. As for food, it’s often a quiet time, so manufacturers using up left over budget call us – a quick Crimbo shoot! And then we have the artisan and seasonal products like Turkey – left to the Autumn, as and only when they are in season or at their freshest. So in autum we can totally confuse the couriers who are dropping things off, as they peer into the studio and see Christmas trees, roast dinners, and mock up boxed presents. Yes, we do need therapy!
As for John Munro, they are a butcher chain and meat processing group that has embraced the idea of recipes – we have shot all of their stunning product and they are now using the recipe card idea in store, in deliveries and throughout their social media. So, we were asked to do a Christmas theme and of course a Christmas left over series – a commission of 12 recipes in one go all to be cooked, images to be styled and then the easy bit – photographed! We then layout the recipe cards or design leaflets for them for on line use or local printing.
To be different, on this Christmas occasion, we used slate as a background – no Christmas chintz. These backgrounds we make ourselves and then paint – yes, MDF, sculptured wall filler and then hours of careful painting so it looks just like slate. The props are Spode – well, it is a special dinner isn’t it and we thought the idea of creating a portrait of the dish worked better than the usual shot across the cut line. The roast potatoes we used rape seed oil – it makes them look more yellow and crispy!
