Food Photographer. Meat & Poultry. S Collins Butchers.

Food Photography for a master butcher and fine meats.

This was our first food photo shoot in a building site – no joking, a building site.  Collins group are expanding and that means more offices, only they hadn’t finished when we arrived including having to stretch electricity via a couple of extension leads into the chosen room, but as they say the show had to go on!

The big issue though here was light – all the windows had to be basically blacked out using foamex and then the other problem, blue – yes we said blue.  The protective coatings on all the room’s wall finishes was the transparent blue plastic.  Great for protecting the white plastic wall panels underneath whilst under construction but a nightmare for casting blue light into the images during the shoot.  The whole shoot had to be based on a white card – not just at the beginning and perhaps a little way through – every single image as the light kept changing as the sun came in and out creating deeper blue casts at one time then another.

The meat produced at Collins is stunning there is little to argue there and their approach to preparing the joints, cuts

and meats was probably one of the best we have ever worked with,  Richard the Operations Manager sorting everything to the shoot workflow and making sure each was presented at its best.   So light issues aside the photoshoot was very straight forward – a whole day shooting joints for website and trade brochure use, all to be consistent in style and format so that chefs would concentrate on the product and not the props etc.

Styling under these circumstances is very challenging as it’s a limited prop set so to speak.  Also as professionals would be viewing the images as well as consumers, props had to accurately reflect the cut, roast or joint. And all this gear came out of a car because we shot the entire collection on site.  This mean’t a lot of preparation and planning before the day and a healthy dose of ‘just take in case’,  so the 4×4 was full to the brim.  A nice shoot made all the more enjoyable by good client planning and Richard who gave a strong brief.
