Part of being in the Highlands means your product line often has a healthy ‘gift’ element to it. By that it’s generally a product that has refined packaging – often a smaller version of a product or perhaps a little more polish applied to it. Either way the product is packaged as a gift – that could be for a family member or as is often the case in the Highlands a tourist purchase.

Using packaging and product to sell a heritage brand…

Depending on the style chosen selling a ‘heritage story’ using both packaging and the product itself can be a challenge – sometimes the style is period and the packaging contemporary. On this occasion it sort of worked.

Using ingredients to demonstrate taste or prominence.

We are guilty of always reaching for a ‘product’ ingredients when it comes to food as a metaphor for taste. Only you have to be careful. If oils are used showing fruit, nuts or other ingredients is actually misleading and not helping. We’re lucky the real thing is used here. YRSFood, Food Photographer, Inverness.

So, we were not surprised having finished the traditional product line of breads, cobs and cakes for Ashers, when they asked us to look the other side of the business… catering birthday or celebration cakes and of course the gift tins.

Now as a studio we are totally divided… them’s on the left like the fancy cakes – you know icing and all that frosting.  Then there’s the sensible side of the business and ‘we’ like the fruit cakes… The sort that could hold the door open in a gale!

So to work with the gift tin products was a real treat.  They actually smell of whisky… no ‘light on the hand’ here when pouring and you can actually smell the differing liquors, yes a real selection of cakes As with all the clients we referred back to the styling ‘job-bag’.

That’s a simple folder of ideas we use to present a product or range against a brand promise or perhaps a corporate style. We have to work with job bags as a) we have so many different clients we need to write it all down to keep it clear for the client and b) we can be asked to shoot something two years on using the same style, which may sound easy to repeat but it isn’t.

The job bag not only includes layout ideas but also a list of props options, backgrounds thoughts and notes if we’ve experimented, notes on how we style, reasons we chose vertical angles not from the side all that sort of thing. It also has the measurements – yes distances from and highs alongside the background tables so if we ever have to, we can rebuild the set in a mater of moments – providing we can find the job bag so admin is very important!
